Essay by definition (100 points) - Challenges

Over the next few days, you will write an essay that focuses on the challenges that the Rocket Boys faced while they were conducting their experiments and building the winning entry for the national science fair. To begin, the first paragraph needs to introduce the film as well as the characters that will be discussed in the paper. In addition, the opening paragraph will define the term challenge.

Each of the three following body paragraphs will address challenges faced by the characters in the film. Consider using this pattern for the body paragraphs: state the challenge and the characters that are affected by the challenge; and state how the character overcomes the challenge. Be sure to discuss the character’s work ethic or his support system in detail.

The final body paragraph should discuss a challenge that you face and how you plan to overcome that challenge.

For a conclusion, answer a rhetorical question that makes the reader think about the overall impact of the Rocket Boys’ work. What impact did these men and women have on the lives of others?

Finally, create a works cited page for the film.

Characters to consider:
• Homer Hickam
• John Hickam
• Miss Riley
• Quentin Wilson
• Roy Lee Cook
• Sherman O’Dell
• Elsie Hickam
• Ike Bykovsky
• Dr. Werner von Braun

Points to remember as you write:
• reference the Great American Dream;
• use transitional words and phrases;
• do not use the word you;
• only use the word I in the paragraph about your personal challenges;
• put the title in italics;
• do not use any contractions;
• incorporate five vocabulary words; and use Times New Roman 12.
