Welcome back to High Point!
This site was created to help you stay current with your assignments. You can check it from home if you are absent or if you forgot your planner at school.
This first week we are going to work on diction. Diction means your choice of words. Good diction will help you to improve your reading, your speaking, and your writing skills. To begin, we are going to have a banned word poster challenge with prizes for the winners as well as a new set of words to learn.
Let's have a great start to this new year! I am looking forward to experiencing your creative side.
Banned Word Poster Contest
(20 points)
He got that for her while ago. Huh? Do you really think that your reader has any idea what you mean by that statement?
Mrs. Porter sometimes has no idea whatsoever what a student means when he writes a statement, because the sentence is so vague. The student may actually know the correct response, but he wrote in such a vague manner that his teacher could substitute hundreds of other words in the place of those pronouns and verbs.
Fortunately, there is a cure for this particular problem. Good writers are specific. Good writers think about the words that they use. Good writers take the time to make their thoughts clear so that others will understand.
To help you keep in mind a list of words that are just too vague to use when you write, we are having a Banned Word Poster Contest. Obviously, you may not use any profanity in class. I am not talking about those words. I am talking about words such as got, stuff, things, a lot, pretty, nice, and like. Your assignment is to create a list of eight words that really lack substance. Next, create a poster that bans those words. One of last year’s winners flushed those words right down the toilet.
Your creation is due this Friday afternoon. It should be neat and original.
Good luck!
