Week of May 20

Research Papers

Period 3 research papers are due May 30, and Period 5 research papers are due May 29.
If you have any questions or have lost your final handout, it is reprinted below.
All papers must be printed. No electronic submissions will be accepted.

The final day for after school help is Tuesday, May 27.

Argumentative Research Paper (100 points)
Final Guideline

1. All work must be typed. Use Times New Roman 12. Double-space your work, even the annotated bibliography.
2. Do not use a cover page or any type of plastic folder. Neatly place all work in your folder.
3. Your folder must contain the paper with annotated bibliography attached and all handouts. I will provide a check-off list the week that the paper is due.
4. The heading goes in the upper, left-hand corner. Include your name, CP English 10,
Research Paper, and the due date.
5. Paragraph by paragraph this is how your research paper should read:

Section one: This is your opening paragraph. Introduce the topic, introduce your
experts and their articles one by one, and present your thesis statement.
Section two: This is your transitional paragraph. Provide the reader with the
appropriate background information that she needs to understand your topic. Give
relevant definitions and any important historical background in this section. If
you have a lot of information, this may take two paragraphs.
Section three: This may take one or two paragraphs. Take the first author that
agrees with your thesis statement. Explain his/her findings on the topic. Perhaps
this author has some good statistics that you can report or a good example about
your topic. Be sure to quote the article. Explain the quote in detail. Make sure
that everything relates to the topic.
Section four: This may take another one or two paragraphs. Take the second author that agrees with your thesis statement. Explain his/her findings on the topic. Can you use some statistic or an example from this person’s article? Be sure to quote something interesting from the article. Explain the quote in your words. Make sure that everything relates to the topic.
Section five: This may take another one or two paragraphs. Take the author that
disagrees with your thesis statement. Explain his/her findings on the topic. Be sure to include a quote. Explain the quote. Make sure that everything relates to the topic.
Section six: Return to your thesis statement with a phrase such as “Taking into account the opinions of the experts, it is easy to conclude [insert your thesis statement here]. Explain why you came to your decision. ELABORATE!

Attach your annotated bibliography to the paper.

6. Do not use the words I, you, or me in the paper. A point will be subtracted each time one of these words is used.

7. Late papers lose ten points each day. No papers will be accepted after June 3.
